Sainik School Purulia is one of the 25 Sainik Schools in the country and was established in the year 1962 under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence for the benefit of the comparatively weaker sections of the society and for the removal of regional imbalances in the officer's cadres of Defence Services in India. The school is situated in the idyllic foreground of the Ayodhya Hills, covering an area of 279 acres of land on the Purulia-Ranchi Road, 04 km away from Purulia town, which is a district headquarters.
The main aim of the school is to prepare its boys mentally, physically and academically through a balanced curriculum for a career in commissioned ranks of the Armed Forces through National Defence Academy, besides making them ready with adequate leadership potential and confidence to take up the challenging professions in other important walks of public life and also to become good and useful citizens of tomorrow. The School imparts 10 + 2 (Science stream only) pattern of education under the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and is a member of IPSC
The banyan tree inspires learning, wisdom and enlightenment. It also depicts a sense of permanence and durability, its trunk shows links of industry. The leaves signify evergreen youthfulness. The full bloomed lotus magnifies the richness in intellect and culture. The hill stands for firmness and the flowing water signifies dynamism. The inscription stress on "Knowledge through Discipline ".
The school motto "CAN DO IT" signifies an indomitable spirit, determined to strive, to achieve, and not to yield till the aim is fulfilled
The administration of the Sainik Schools is vested in an autonomous body called the Board of Governors, Sainik Schools Society, under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister of Defence. The Chief Ministers and Education Ministers of the States where the Sainik Schools are located are also members of the Board of Governors. The General Officer Commanding, Bengal Area is the Chairman of Local Board of Administration, Sainik School Purulia. The Honorary Secretary (Dir Trg, MoD), Sainik Schools Society, administers 25 Sainik Schools all over the country. He is assisted by two Inspecting Officers deputed by MoD having rich experience about Sainik Schools
